Three were made for SCCLL members to attend the Equal Justice Conference in May in Minneapolis. Four were made for SCCLL members to attend the Annual Meeting in Portland in July. Each of the grants was $850 for a total of $5950 awarded to SCCLL members. The criteria for both grants were the same: 1. Membership in State, Court & County SIS is a prerequisite to receiving the grant. 2. Grants should be made on the basis of: a. Financial need b. Proven potential ability c. Promise of future usefulness and permanence in the law library profession 3. Grants may be withdrawn for sufficient cause by unanimous action of the Committee. 4. Should circumstances prevent use of the grant by the recipient, the award is to be handled at the discretion of the Committee. 5. Recipient is required to provide receipts of expenses, sent to the Committee chair within a week of the conference conclusion and repay any surplus over actual expenses. 6. Only one award per year will be made to any individual. First time applicants will take priority over previous recipients. However, an award may be presented to a previous recipient if there are fewer qualified applicants than awards available. 7. All members of SCCLL are eligible regardless of number years of membership. Members were notified of applications procedures and deadlines in the newsletter, on the SCCLL website and by announcement on the sections listserv. There were a total of five applications for the Equal Justice Conference Grant but one was withdrawn prior to the awarding of the grants. The committee reviewed the remaining applications and was pleased to award the $850 grant to Melissa Barr, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Jane Colwin, Wisconsin State Law Library, and Judy Meadows, State Law Library of Montana. The committee received nine applications for the Annual Meeting Grant. One was disqualified as the applicant was not a member of SCCLL and two which were received after the application deadline could not be considered. The remaining six applicants were all of high caliber and the committee had several discussions and series of rankings in order to determine the four successful applicants. I commend the committee members for their balanced consideration and measured thought in coming to a consensus on the successful applicants. The four Annual Meeting Grants of $850 each were made to John Cannan, Montgomery County Circuit Court Law Library, Joanne Gialelis, Utah State Law Library, Carolyn Tanen, U.S. Court of Appeals Library, and Donna Williams, California Court of Appeal Library. The process for application, and the timelines established for consideration and awarding of the grants worked very well. However, I would suggest that in the interests of time and of saving paper and postage (five copies of the application are mailed to the committee chair and then redistributed to the committee members) application by email be allowed. I also urge all members to support the Silent Auction which generates funds for the awards. Dedicated members of the committee to which I give my heartfelt thanks were.
